I have a Stewart stage 1 water pump on. I installed it 2 1/2 years ago (only 300 miles on it).
I noticed the past couple of times I've had it out that at IDLE ONLY, it has a squeak. The pump DOES NOT squeak when the engine is cold, only when hot. As soon as I am off idle, no more squeak!!!!!
I replaced the belts with a spare set to rule them out. It is the pump.
What would you do???
1) Replace with a new pump
2) Replace with another Stewart? (not too happy that it squeaks after so few miles)
3) Live with the idle only squeak (or is this a sign of impending failure?)
As usual, money is tight and I would hate to replace it for just a noise but......I don't want to be stranded either
:yesnod:
Re: Water pump squeak---need advice please (7tea1)
Check your pulleys - often a small wobble will cause the side of the belt to
squeak against it. Check all the pulleys - unless you are SURE it comes from
the pump. Using a length of fuel or heater hose as a stethescope helps
to pinpoint the exact source of the squeak, without getting your ears caught
in the belts. :D :troll
Re: Water pump squeak---need advice please (7tea1)
The squeak comes from interaction between the belt and pulleys as the belt is slipping when getting hot and causing the squeak. The pump makes a rumbling noise when the bearings go so your pump is fine. Check the tension of the belt to make sure its tight enuff. If that doesnt work try a very small (very) amount of CRC or similar lubricant on the sides of the belt. put on the sides only not the base of the belt. This might reduce the squeak when it slips. Also check the cooling fan and make sure the bolts havent come slightly loose which will put your pulley out of alignment.

Tippi58 and David,
You might have figured it out.
I noticed tonight that my AC belt is ever so SLIGHTLY not in direct alignment with the WP pulley. If I "sight" down the alternator to WP belt, it is dead on, but the AC belt to WP is off just a bit.
Now the million dollar question------how do I pull the AC compressor back a 1/16 of an inch to get the belt to line up???
Any ideas out there???
Thanks!!!!!!!!!
