Default Engine Mounts won't line up... looking for advice

Ok, so it was all going smooth, the engine had been rebuilt, it mated back to the transmission, got one engine mount bolt in, but the other side just won't line up, engine up, suspension down, etc. Now, I took the other side back out.

Its really close! But, it seems like I can't get them lined up back to front, I can get the front chassis hole and the front engine mount hole to line up, but its as if the back is off skew somehow.

Anyone have any words of wisdom? I'm really stuck. Its a '74 454 TH400.

Thanks!
David :mad

It's possible you got the wrong engine mounts? Had this happen on my basket case, had 2 different ones. Also possible the transmission mount may have moved, they do have the ability to be shifted in the crossmember.

You might try loosening the bolts to the engine/frame until you get the
long bolts in place - then tighten up the mounting bolts.

I too had the wrong mounts before - or maybe they were just made
incorrectly. If I recall, they were off by "that much" - but equally in the
front and back.

Good luck.

Ok, so I've almost got it, the wife said something like, dinnertime, you better come in if you ever want to eat again!.

Anyway, looks like I'm almost there, lots of swearing, etc. but basically, what happened was that though the top of the engine and bellhousing had mated, the bottom hadn't, so it was like an upside down "V", allowing me to line up the front, but causing the back to be too low. I've got passenger side , working on driver's side tomorrow, I've got the front of it started, and the back is only about 1/8" off. Hopefully, I'll get it!!

Thanks, I'm sure this is just the first of several "help me", as I go through this. Never done much but change my oil before this.

This forum is great!!

Regards,
David

David,

This is routinely a fight. Using a jack under the oil pan (use a block of wood between) helps alot along with a drift pin. Another suggestion is to thread the nut onto the (should be grade 8) bolt as far as it will go and grind a taper on the end. When you back the nut off, it will clean the treads. The bolt is now a "semi" drift pin. If you are within an 1/8" as you say, the bolt should easily find its way home with some minor tapping. A little grease on the end of the bolt helps too.
