I did go to this site: http://www.imaca.org/ and take the test
to obtain certification. Cost to take the test is $15. Upon
passing you are e mailed a temporary certificate.
Before taking the test I printed out the manual at the site and read
thru it.
Will come in handy for purchasing R12.
Re: Update on line EPA certification test (mark79,80)
Just goes to show you how f'ed up the government is...
1. A liscense to buy R-12, one of the most environmentally unfriendly refrigerants, can be obtained by taking an open book test for 15 bucks.
2. A liscense to buy not so unfriendly refrigerants in the residential and commercial field can only be gotten buy studying material(which included stupid info like "in what year did the goverment decide they were going to start this crap") among many other questions only a technician would know, and taking a closed book test, that cost a minimum of $30.
3. The concept that refrigerants "eat" the ozone is a theory, never proven.
4. The military can legally through any refrigeration equipment overboard, freon and all. They are EPA exempt.

I disagree on what you said about the military, they are held to stricter standards than everyone else. ex: windex in the af at many bases considered hazardous and must be checked out and returned and empty disposed of like hazardous material, i know since i did this. that goes for r-12 etc. if they are doing it it is illegal and they will pay big if caught. Base commander can face a personal fine of 10K for his people doing it.
Re: Update on line EPA certification test (LT1driver)
Thanks Lt1 I am glad you replyed. Please don't get me wrong, I am not knocking the military, I think they should be exempt from certain things, but this EPA/Ozone mess has always chapped me.
His fine is only 10k? A technicians fine for venting is 25k, but the wistleblower gets 10k for ratting on him.
Re: Update on line EPA certification test (71,454,4spd)
So the certifacation you just got is good for buying a contaner less than 20# right? And R12 only comes in 30# size? So you still cannot buy the R12. Am I correct on this?
The certification will let you buy any size. But local laws may be a problem. Here the county requires the seller to maintain a list of people that it sells R12 to. The county will occasionaly pull the list and then make a visit to the people that purchased the R12. If you do not have the proper recovery/recycling equipment you get fined. The trick is to just go to the next county over.
