My vote is the diodes. There used to be 3 of them in most alternators, not sure anymore. And one would die, putting output below normal, light goes on. Then the other 2 diodes will pick up the slack until one of them dies, light goes on again, then goes off and shortly thereafter the last one dies from carrying the entire load and you are stuck on the side of the road. Just a lucky coincidence that you saw the light come on for a short time, so you know something is coming. If all was well before, I wouldn't start chasing belts etc., as long as they are tight.
