My dad has a 72 that hasn't had the air running in several years. We pulled all hoses and planned to upgrade to r134 however, the compressor has been sitting with open ports for 6-8 years. Is it possible to use the compressor still? If so, do we need to replace any parts inside?
Lastly, we bought the main AC hose back then and ots been sitting on a shelf since... is that still safe to use if it's been sitting that long?
My quick blush is that your hose is good, but your compressor may not be. Compressors are cheap and you can get them set up for 134. Plus, open ports... ? Who knows what has gone on inside of there?
The hose should be ok. The comp is iffy, but I would run some comp oil thru it and see what comes out, like to flush out junk. You can also put you fingers over the holes to get a feeling if it still has suction/pressure. Your call to replace.
You could use the hose, but it is not optimum for R134a. It probably was intended for R12, your original refrigerant, and will be slightly permeable to R134a, and your system will gradually lose its charge.
R134a requires a barrier hose, which prevents this. All modern hose is made to this standard.
If originality is important, use your A6 compressor, otherwise replace it with a Sanden 508. This unit is much lighter, less bulky, and uses less power. Use the Forum search function for more info on this conversion.
