Re: When's that 5 speed Muncie coming?! (BB wowbagger)
Saw a few posts on it that seemed credible but nothing in the last few months. Hoping for some insider info. ;) Think a member mentioned a guy on a chevelle board who had the scoop.
The latest I got from the Chevelle board was it was put off until next year due to some more pressing issues on other projects. It sounded good at first but it is sounding like it is going to be around 1500 when all is said and done. New case is needed new shifter and some new gears inside the case. Great idea but there are better alternatives for that price. I can't find the link to the post in the Chevelle forum but that is where I got the info.
Assuming the damn thing got any strength to it, like an old muncie...say 450 ft lbs....well, that's fine....but if it's a wimpy thing well forget about it....
Consider a Super T-10 from TexRacing with a Z gearset. About 3.4 first and 1:1 fourth. Should be great with a 3.08 or 2.72 rear end. And it's a drop in with no mods required.
The name of the company that is making this tranny is Autogear in Syracuse, NY. Check them out at autogear.net. I called them about a month ago about the 5 speed overdrive Muncie and they said realistically it would be out next spring to summer. If any of you remember they have reproduction M22's with Italian made gearsets, supercases and steel mid plates. They built one of these up in the May issue of Car Craft. I would love the 5 speed myself. Bill.
Fevre,
I believe it took Autogear three tries to COPY the M-22 gears correctly, they also had to recall ALL the HD mid plates they built and the "super case" does NOT allow the trans to breathe/vent so the question should be "when will they have one that works" not "when will they have one"!! The trans rebuilders I know sell the stuff but will not use it themselves. Those Italian M-22 gears may have the same pitch as the GM stuff BUT they are NOT made of the same material. ...redvetracr

Redvetracr, man that is some great information. I was thinking of doing the M22 thing but not now. I guess I will just have my M21 rebuilt. Anything I can do in rebuilding to strengthen it as it will be behind my 600 horse big block although I don't plan on drag racing it. I will cross the supercase and mid plate and M22 gears off my list. Thanks again for the info and would love to hear what you would do in my case. By the way, not considering and overdrive at this time. Bill.
