When checking your clutch pedal free-play be sure to pull up on the pedal to full stop then down to resistance. It is not unusual for the pedal return spring to weaken over the years and not pull the pedal back to full stop on it's own. This may result in excessive free-play and improper clutch disengagement.

Thanks Tom, good tip. We did pull the trans on Saturday. My trans guy is going to pull it apart and hopefully find something that points to the lack of solid 3rd gear engagement. I also plan to check the clutch fully.
