81 differential
is it possible to remove the differential housing unit from the 81 while leaving the batwing(bolted to the frame) and spring(bolted to the batwing and both trialling arms) in position?

If that's what You are after then I would probably pull the whole thing out. Pull the Trailing Arm Bolts and the Batwing Bolts. Then drop and slide backwards, the Yoke in the Trans will pull out so You will not need to disconnect the U-Joint Bolts which are time consuming.
