Default Finally have my engine back, intake/distributor question...

Hey guys, I finally have my engine back. It's been awhile since I posted, so as info...I had my stock L-48 bored .30 over, with Keith Black pistons, GMPP Vortec heads, Edelbrock Performer intake, and I had it all balanced. I'm running around 9.6:1 compression (using thicker head gaskets than stock), stock volume oil pump, and the jury is still out on the carb. A new Edelbrock carb and Summit HEI distibutor are sounding pretty good right about now. Also I went with a black block, black heads, silver valve covers and the aluminum intake is unpainted. Corporate blue was tempting, but I chickened out at the end.

Anyway, I'm getting ready to put the engine in. And I was looking at my old intake. There is a small silver cylinder at the rear of the intake. There is an electrical connection that ran from it to my distributor. What in the heck is this thing? And does my complete ignorance where this part is concerned, show just how much trouble I'm in, when I go to put this all back together?

Thanks in advance! :yesnod:

Hey man,
I was about to send out a search party for ya.
Glad to hear you got the mouse back. I myself have been torturing my neighborhood with the sounds of carb tuning thru chambered exhaust.
I think you are referring to the little capacitor/resistor that goes to the coil. I dont know what it does but I kept mine.
You ought to cruise by sometime.

Stew! Your car looks awesome. I'm jealous. I should have mine together just in time to throw on the snow chains and take it for a Christmas drive. That bastard! Oh well. IT should be worth the wait.

I believe you are right. That's what I was thinking it was. But I didn't want to take anything for granted. So I too will keep mine.

Thanks. And when she's a rollin, assuming there isn't snow or salt on the ground, I'll give you a holler.

The cylinder your refering to is the tach filter if I'm not mistaken.

Tha silver cylinder you are refering to is used to supress ignition noise from being transmitted into your radio. You tend to hear more ignition noises when listening to AM stations than you do when listiening to FM.

Sorry guys. But which is it? I have one vote each for:

resistor, capacitor, whatever.
Tach filter.
Ignition noise suppresor.

Is it all these things? Just one. Or none?

Do I need three of them, one to do each of the above tasks?

I guess the answer is, regardless of what it is, I should keep it. Right?

Ignition noise suppressor. Mounts to the coil bracket on my 71.

joevette, your 77 should have a HEI dist, and the wire at the dist cap next to the power wire is the tach wire and the silver thing inline is your tach filter. Save it, you will need it. Hershey :chevy

Tach filter not radio noise filter.
