I'm looking for the bushing that's supposed to limit the maximum mechanical advance in the distributor. I read through all of the papers on distributors at corvettefaq.com, and this one describes where it is on MSD distributors and what the different sizes of bushings do for you: http://www.randomunity.com/superrod/...distribut.html
So before I go yanking my distributor out, is it same same for my stock mechanical distributor?
Yes the MSD bushings are the same and will work. Crane sells some also. The busing goes on the underside of the plate that the advance weights ride on. There is s pin the come through a slot. Sometimes the old plastic bushing is missing. If it IS missing it would give you WAY too much advance. I belive I used the one that gives you 22 degs. mechanical advance. I don't remember which color.
Re: Bushing, bushing, where's the bushing? (silvervetteman)
Thanks, Larry--knew I could count on you! Do you know if I have to pull the distributor and install the bushing from underneath as with the MSD distributor, or can the bushing be reached with the distibutor in the car?
Re: Bushing, bushing, where's the bushing? (Fevre)
Some time with a mirror and flashlight you can do it in the car, but sometimes the old bushing is difficult to get out. A lot depends on you patience. and dexterity.
When I rebuilt my distributor I replaced the bushing with one that I got with the recurve kit from Lars. My old distributor was in bad shape, the bushing had disintegrated to a meer ghost of its former self. Rebuilding the distributor fixed a multitude problems I was having with my car.
