I put the sprocket in a vise and drive the crank onto it with a sledge hammer. Hah, just kidding.
Actually, the heating method works awesome. You can also gently tap it on using a brass drift and tapping in a crossing pattern. There is a special tool that http://www.powerhouseproducts.com sells, it also works for installing harmonic balancers, very useful.
