One more new kid on the block. I've been monitoring for a few days and like what i've seen and read from you folk!!!!
I am trying to remove the speedo and tach. Have the right side and center dash removed and the lower rightside out of the way. I removed the column bolts from the bracket under the dash. Do I simply push down as the manual states ?? I do not want to break anything!!!. Thanks for any and all help. Mutley
Get into your best chinese acrobat ensemble outfit and crawl down into the drivers side floorboard. At the firewall where the column goest through, you should see two bolts, one on either side of the column. Loosen these and it will free up enough play to drop the column and get the dash pad out.
Actually there are two nuts on the inside of the dash that you have to remove. Also, it is best to disconnect the steering column from the steering gear as well. This way you don't put any bending moments into the collapsible column.
The last time that I dropped the column, I marked the column shaft and the flex coupling flange that connects to it with a piece of chalk. I removed the cross bolt (take it all the way out). The splined column shaft slipped right out of the flange with very little effort.
Since you have come this far, if you just disconnect the ignition switch connector, the turn signal connector, and the dimmer switch connector, the column should easily come all the way out of the car. This will give you a lot more room to work around the instrument cluster.
