Got the PS adjustment nut loose (thanks for the encouragement, shaun8484!), now attempting to curse the alternator belt back into its pulley. Alt as far towards the major pulleys as I can push it, but sitting on what looks like a vacuum (?) line, and won't give me the last damn half inch I need to slip the new alt belt over the pulley.
I think I'll swear at it some more and if that fails go buy ANOTHER WRENCH to fit the alt pulley bolt.

Unless of course anyone has any better ideas...
Fox,
I dont know if you got it on or not, all I had to do was put the belt around the crank and water pump first then give it a good tug to get it over alternator pulley, I wont say that it was easy, but with a little patience you should be able to wiggle it on there.
HAW HAW HAW I NEGLECTED TO CHECK WHICH AMP I HAVE AND SO BOUGHT THE WRONG BELT FML
Is this the sort of part that I really need to spend another 16 bucks on at Corvette America or is a standard NAPA belt of the right length going to work adequately?

I just went to Auto Zone or Advanced to get my belts....
I just changed all the belts and hoses as well as my water pump. The alternator belt was too short in my opinion as there was next to no clearance between the alternator and the valve cover and getting the belt on was a bitch. Yet according to a couple of parts store it was the correct belt. I still chose to get a belt a 1/2 longer (thru NAPA) and to me it was the correct way to go. Now the alternator sits in the middle of the adjustment slot and there's nice clearance from the valve cover. This was on a 71 small block with no PS.

I shoulda gone for a slightly longer belt for the same reason, there's nowhere near the 25 mm the alternator belt guard says that it wants.
Anyways, in the spirit of keeping y'all abreast of my car-derping, I did finally get everything put together.
However, in the depths of my frustration I briefly endeavoured to pull the alternator out and in the process disconnected the distributor cap. When I got everything put back together, she turned over just fine but wouldn't spark. After a bit of thinking, I eventually got her turning over again.
SO!
I declare this thread CLOSED. Next, I'll figure out why I'm not getting any air out of the cabin vents.
Now is also a good time to start a small log book (keep it handy in the glove box) of any servicing you've done to be a ready reference down the road when you're wondering when exactly I replaced the anti-freeze last...
Also start a section in it to record part numbers and pertinent info such as belt lengths and widths. It will save time in the future if you ever need to replace them again.
