Re: Changing The Rear Differential (OHSIXX)
Mechanically pretty easy. The hard part, sometimes really hard, is getting the rear cross member out. On average probably takes 8 to 10 hours to do a complete swap.
Re: Changing The Rear Differential (69 N.O.X. RATT)
Me and a budiie did it in my driveway in about 6 hours from start to finish.....swithched out the 3:08 and were cruising down the road with the 3:73's installed that evening
6 to 10 hours seems right. Thats not counting mounting the new crown and pinion. Pretty basic job. Put a jack under the dif before you undo the crossmember bolts. Then easily let it down and drag it out. Put it back the same way. Dont forget to use new split pins in the trailing arms.
OHSIXX,
If your smart you`ll pull back the carpet and cut a hole just above the 4 bolts that hold the diff to the crossmember, it makes "live" a little easier. (and you can pop rivet a piece of aluminum over the hole)

   - Nice....plus you can't drop it on yourself that way !
When I did mine I left the cover mounted and just removed the pumkin the trick to this is to look carefuly at the diagram in the Haynes manual as to the position of the yokes.
Ive done it both ways. Once to replace the sideyoke retainer snaprings and once again to swap out the 3.08 for 3.90. I found it much easier to just drop the whole rear crossmember with the cover and diff intact. Then disassemble when the whole thing is out of the car.
Re: Changing The Rear Differential (Cookwithvette)
I will need to do this soon.
Does anybody have a complete list of what is needed to swap the diff.?
I know I'll need the differential itself, since I'm going with different gears I'll need a different speedo gear. Anything else?
This is my winter project too.. Mine is leaking. Dropping the pumpkin and cross bar together... basically disconneting the drive and 1/2 drive shafts, struts and whatever.. then unbolt the cross memeber and wola.. she's out.. right? :jester Is there any value in keeping the 3.08 pumpkin. One of the rear end guys will swap what you have for a rebuilt what you want for a price. From an originality concept.. does the pumpkin make a difference or just the gear set inside it?
