I just installed a new starter last night. The first few times it started right up. Now every once in a while it sounds like the starter is not engaging. I hear a loud metal ping :smash: then the starter motor just runs. The old starter didn't have any shims on it so I didn't put any on the new one. This is a rebuilt starter. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.
It sounds like the starter gear is not engaging the ring gear. Check to make sure the gear is being thrown all the way out. Check the starter position to be sure it hasnt shifted. Also, you might be able to shim it to bite deeper on the ring gear.
Thanks for the advice. I will try shimming it. How do you check if the gear is being thrown out all the way? I don't think it has shifted. I tightened the bolts pretty good and checked them after it did it.

Take the starter off and apply 12v to it to get it to turn over.

You might want to reseat the starter. Then, with someone to reach inside to crank it up, get under the car and watch the starter. BE CAREFUL TO HAVE THE CAR SECURELY POSITIONED ON JACKSTANDS BEFORE GOING UNDERNEATH.
