Default Problem with the idle on my 68...

This morning - I wanted to take my 68 to work... I hadn't driven the Vette for a week. She started right up... I have no choke - and usually it takes a little bit until the car would idle... However - today - even after 5 minutes - she wouldn't idle... Everything else seemed normal... I drove the Vette back home and took my daily driver to work.. I wonder what could be the problem.... I will adjust the idle higher but I don't know how it could have gotten messed up.... Or did somebody put sugar in my tank?? What are the symptoms if somebody puts sugar in the tank??

Olivier

Welcome to world of "icing"... What was the temperature this morning when you drove it? Humidity? What ends up happening is a layer of ice (from the cool air coming in from air cleaner) forms on the throttle plates and will continue to form while driving initially. The only way I was able to stop it was to turn off the car (after it warmed up), let it sit for 5 minutes (ice melted) and then start it up again, from then I'd be fine.

Ok, just seen your from Floriday, it could still happen I would think if the conditions were right.

This morning we had 83 degrees and high humidity (as always). The high is forecasted to be 92..
I'm here in Florida... cooler temperatures only start in mid to late October... and cooler means - only 80's for the high and 60's to 70's for the low...
Right now - it's hot and humid as in hell....

Olivier

I have no choke or choke tower.... it's a racing carb...

Try pulling a plug or two and see what they look like. I am having a problem with oil on the plug threads and suspect leaking valve stem seals.

I will check them when I get back home...However - the engine is new... I don't think that there's a problem with the engine.. I think that it's more of a carburation problem... The engine was running great - exept that it wouldn't idle...

Thanks

Olivier

mY '68 does the same darn thing & I'm in North Texas where it's a little hotter but less humid.... :cuss

My belief is that it's 99% carb. trouble.....especially if it's a Holley - those darn things never stay tuned. :mad

Anyways - I usually solve the problem by adjusting the Idle Mixture screws for the 1,467th time !!!

What do you mean when you say the car won't idle? Do rpms stay at 1500 when you are in neutral and off the gas? Lower? Higher? Do they stay wherever they were? 2500? Or, do they only return to a certain higher than normal level? I had a problem with racing engine; rpms would stay at around 2500... sometimes more. I could tap the accelerator lightly and bring them down a bit. I would shut the engine off, and after much coughing, spluttering, dieseling, engine would finally die and I would pull off the air cleaner to look at the carb and everything appeared normal

Turned out it was simply the throttle cable and linkage getting hung up on the bottome of the aircleaner base! :) MJ

I just came back from a test drive in my 68 and everything is back to normal.. I went to the Interstate and floored the pedal a couple of times.. After driving the Corvette at higher RPM and flooring the pedal several times - the Vette is idleing normal again...

Yeah....but let it set for a week - restart it 'cold' and see what happens !

I bet your idle mixture screws are either too far out or too far in !

Or the float level is off or might be sticking. If it's going to be an intermittent problem(always a PITA) you might have to catch it as it acts up to get the real cause of the problem.

The Vette usually doesn't sit for 7 consecutive days.. I usually drive my 68 2 - 3 times per week... However - I will watch if any of th problems will re-occur...

Just a guess here....but did you check the needle seat on the carb? Sometimes a bit of dirt gets stuck ...or even gasket material .....and that will definitely cause idling problems. When you don't drive the car often, it seems to happen most.

I didn't check... Even if I'm not driving the Vette - I will start her at least 2 - 3 times a week... just to prevent that kind of problems....
