I have completed my cam swap out and am trying to start the vette.
It started up the first try and then ran out of gas because there was a kink in the line. Fixed that. Now it starts for a second and then a big back fire with a flame shooting up through the carb. Not a good thing.
Need the forums help immediately!!!
My guess is the dist is 180 degress off. I like to pull the driver side valve cover and hand crank the engine around till I see the #1 intake valve open then close and once the timing mark comes around you are on tdc. Pull the dist cap, the rotor should be pointing towrds the #1 cyl, if it is pointing towards the firewall you are 180 degrees off. Been there done that. BTW Pull all the plugs and and the engine will rotate by hand much easier.
I don't know if it can get off or not but when I put the dist in the rotor was pointing at #1. I'll give it a try. If it is then I somehow adjusted all the valves 180 degrees off also. Hope not, I just spent hours trying to make sure it was all correct before startup.
How bad will this mess up the new cam, if at all, by rotating the engine so much?
As long as you coated the cam and lifters with the break in lube and also primed your oil pump, you should be OK with a few revolutions. Remember the timing mark goes around twice for each one fire of the cyl. IF it is off 180 you need to pull the dist and rotate the rotor 1/2 turn. You might need to rotate the oil pump as well to mesh everything up properly.
If you have already had the car running before you ran out of gas,It does not sound like your out 180deg.It may be that your needle an seat is sticking.Just a thought.

Good catch! If it ran, then you might just be a tooth off or valve not adjusted properly. Still think checking the dist against the #1 valve action is a good idea.
