Hi I have a 1978 corvette with a 350 sb engine I have a demon speed demon carb and a eldelbrock performer eps manifold the carb has an electric choke also I have a hei distributor with the factory hood. I am looking for an air cleaner setup that will work with my car does anyone have some suggestions for me thanks for your help
I think you may find that a normal dropped base interferes with the HEI. Particularly if it is the larger factory HEI. What we discovered was that the interference was pretty minor and that by trimming the base where it hits the HEI, it would fit and the filter element would easily compress there. The lid sits above the HEI, so that didn't interfere. In the end the mod was pretty invisible unless you looked for it.
If you have access to one of the normal mid 60's open element air cleaners, you can give it a try and see if it can work for you before buying one. Of course that doesn't address the height of the air cleaner, so that may still pose a problem with the hood. If it does that may be able to be addressed by a drop base such as resdoggie posted.

I'm using a Summit 239433 with about 1" of drop base. I have more than 1/2" of hood clearance at the front if the air cleaner top. It is mounted on a Quick Fuel HS780 with electric choke.
You can see in the photo it works with my MSD HEI, just barely. No cutting involved.

Good luck... GUSTO
Exactly. You can hardly notice it unless you really look. I was also able to retain the heat shielding. I have a 4" air filter under my '76 hood but my carb pad height is near stock on the Team G intake.
corvette 1978, get the lowest drop base that will clear so you can use a higher air filter.
