Default My Dyno Disaster

I had the 'ol 77 dyno tuned last week and man oh man it turned out to be a cluster fu@#. Carb power valve was blown, distributor advance was not working properly, consistant 5K runs blew out a collector gasket and the rear seal of the intake gasket, wrong type plugs for my heads (too short), snapped a cheap-o alternator belt, and the final results were very dissapointing. The collector gasket was the cheapest gasket used during the rebuild, so Percy's aluminum is on there now. I also didn't take Forum advise, and I used the rubber seals on the intake...MISTAKE! Dyno guy said RTV front and rear... I said "yeah, the forum guys will spank me...but I now know I should have". After numerous jetting, timing changes, recurve dist, he settled on 18deg initial, 46@3K. and #70 primary jet. (I think) Silvia runs very well. Just not fast enough. As many have said, gear and stahl are a MUST for it to be at it's best. See ya!!

Eddie, take heart. My only dyno run this year started with my car crapping out over 4000 and a flat tire on the dyno.

Those motor parts were picked then and the rest was to be done later based on parts bought to make for a " performance packaged" ,the rest being a 2200-2400 stall converter and replacement of the 3.08 gears to 3.55 or 3.70

Is this still going to happen?

Funny thing about mechanicals, you can follow the exact same formula 5 times in succession and have 5 different results, unless you are Ferrari and their F1 team. I had found the best part of building the new engine was the enourmous learning curve that I went through, met a great guy that spoon fed me and tortuously walked me through the process. Is everything perfect - nope, but the question for me to answer was "was it worth it" - definately. Today I moved the vacuum tube to the front of the carb from the side and gained a few degrees of advance, next I rejetted the primary 3 times to find the one that seemed to work the best, as it turned out it was one that no-one had recommended. This weekend I am going to weld a spot on my headers that was not welded fully together when I got them - small pin hole. I think a lot of us get to easilly caught up in the hp wars, sort of like 2 footitice when you own a boat - always wanting 2 feet more. I have no real idea what my engine is putting out could be 100 hp or 900 hp, I really don't care, what matters is that when I get behind the wheel all the stress of my daily life seems to disappear for those all to short moments. The car does what I ask of it, pulls nice and strong, and since I do 90% highway driving it is a great cruiser. Ed I truly hope that you get your problems fixed, they don't sound like they are too major, thank goodness, MM thanks again for your advice and patience and best of luck in your future endeavours. They're cars, they do inspire passion in us all, but they are not people and it is people with all of our follies who really matter the most.

Yes Curtis... twords the end of winter when I'm finished restoring the '72. I am most dissapointed with all the system breakdowns (vac advance, intake gasket, pwr valve) during dyno. Dyno guy also readjusted my valves...don't know why cause now they are noisy. I had them adjusted perfect :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: Thanks for the words of encouragement guys....
GDH. I now have a new perspective on things... Thanks Doc, and how much do I owe you for the consultation???
