Default high torque starter

I decided to put a high torque starter in the 75 to increase the clearance to my new headers. Since I have the battery out I used jumper cables to test it. The car turned over well without any noticeable bad noises but I didn't want the engine to start so I left the spark plugs out. Has anyone converted to the small motor starter and if so were there any problems I should be aware of?
Thanks in advance, Jerry

Default High torque Starters

Hello,
I have a gear drive starter like what you are describing and it was a breeze to install.
I put it on a big block with headers and the only thing I did was rotate the motor one notch to get as much clearance as possible. The one I bought allows the motor to be rotated around to several mounting points to find the optimum location.
Just be very careful how you run the wires to it as they can be damaged by the heat from the headers as well. If you can attach the wires securely and protect them from the heat. I used a DEI insulator to cover the wires near the starter and the headers. It has been on there for 15 years now with no problems....other than sounding like a Chrysler when cranking.
Good Luck!

I put one in. No functional issues so far. My only minor complaint is it has that high pitched cranking sound like a 70's Chrysler starter.

I just finished a 4 speed conversion and installed a 1997 camaro starter. Half the weight and cranks the car a lot faster. You do need a 153 tooth flywheel to do this mod though.

I bought mine from https://www.dbelectrical.com/

No issues with it. Same can't be said for the Powermaster I tried to make work.

+1 for the high torque starter. I installed one of the jegs ones which I had rebuilt at my local starter/alternator shop. I installed it with a one wite hook up and a Ford style solenoid. The solenoid is high on the bulk head, I did it this way so the only wire going down to the start is the main cable from the solendoid. All the others wires are routed away from the header. Perhaps unnecessary, but that's why I'm over-kill-Phil.

My 69 L36 stocker used to eat parts house starters, like every year. I tried one of the Summit house mini-starters when they 1st came out. Best mod I ever made.

I've had one for several years no issues, maybe since it sounds like a Chrysler starter I'll put a 440 in it. Actually, that's an interesting idea.

My '79 has a high torque starter from a '96 full size truck. Haven't even thought about it for years. Absolutely trouble free. Hope I haven't jinxed it by saying that.

I installed a Powermaster Master Torque mini starter in my '81 five years ago. Great clearance and cranking power. I can even take the right header off without removing the starter.

I have had no problems until recently. I'm curious what problems some of you had with the Powermaster starter? Mine just wont crank until smacked with a hammer.

Thanks to everyone for your input. my starter is out of a 97 GMC from my local salvage yard. The yard will guarantee it for a year and I have dealt there many times so they have earned my trust. The only snag I came across is the mounting bolts from my original are a little too short for comfort. A 2 mile trip to the parts store will take care of that.
Can't wait to fire it up to see the difference in sound the headers make.

I've had my Powermaster Master Mini High Torque starter installed for 4-5 years now on my 383 without any issues actually with the starter. I did have an issue two years ago with the starter not cranking the motor over after I drove it and tried restarting. Called Powermaster and they said if your battery is not fully charged and putting out 12.3v, the mini high torque will not crank the motor. Dropped in a new battery and have not had any issues since. BTW, you can send the starter back to Powermaster and they will repair or replace the starter. Give them a call about your issue.

Also, like your avatar...must have been a SAC trained killer. I loved being in SAC.

I sent Powermaster an email. They called me the next day. Now that is customer service. I'm sending my starter in for them to determine what failed. In the meantime I purchased another one to replace it. Another Powermaster.

Yes, I have had VERY good customer/tech support service through Powermaster. I hope they can resolve your issue. I thought maybe I was heat soaking the high torque, but the tech assured me that was not the case with my Powermaster, he was correct.

Just follow the install instructions... if you shim the starter so you get the correct contact (number one mistake people make which makes the starters fail) will not have any issues....mine work better than the oem one and increased the header to starter clearance......

440 SBC based on an LSX block. Sounds like a good idea.
