Default Steering shaft questions

I've been working through Jim Shea's step by step to diagnose what I think is the steering wheel being 180 degrees off. This is based on the fact that my cancel cam works well in one direction but not at all in the other. About half way through now and about to tear into the hub but had a couple of questions.

If you look at the flat part of the steering shaft above the rag joint ( bottom in this pic), is there enough shaft engaged in the coupler? The dental pick (not quite vertical) marks the end of the shaft.

Also, there shouldn't be a flat on the top shaft should there? My car has so much Bubba, this wouldn't surprise me at all but since it's on top, and I think it should be 180 degrees off, I thought I'd ask.

Count the turns from center to full lock both left and right, they should be the same

As far as if the coupler is on the shaft enough, if your box and steering
shaft are original, then there is a notch that the bolt goes through and
can only be correct.

Notch on my steering box that was just rebuilt with the flat on top center,

There is also a similar notch on the steering shaft. Hard to see, but
this is the top of the steering shaft.

Hope this helps.

Donnie

CA,

Good pics from Donnie there and I have my original 72 PS system (Box, Rag Joint etc) on the bench and can grab any pics or measurements you need.

Just a dumb statement but, I'm sure you checked both cancel springs to see if one was broken ?

Seems like a more likely cause for your problem.

Donnie,

The bottom bolt is where it should be on the steering gear input shaft. I may have to pull the rag joint to see if there is an equivalent one on the shaft from the steering wheel. No idea of what's original and what isn't.
