Default Power Steering Pump Removal

Long time lurker here, finally created an account. I have a 1973 Corvette with the 454 I bought a few months ago.

I've removed the alternator, but can't figure out how the heck to get the power steering pump out. I can't seem to get to any of the bolts from the top or bottom. I've reviewed the Service Manual and the Overhaul Manual and both very simply state, "remove pump from attaching pieces". Easier said than done obviously.

So, do I need to pull the pulley while the pump is in the car? If not, how do I actually access the bolts? Perhaps I have some more removal of brackets to do before I can pop this thing loose?

I've stared at this dumb thing for hours now and just can't figure out how it's supposed to come out.

Thanks in advance!

2 bolts into the front of the block, there are holes in the lower bracket to access them, and the rear side mount- long slot to adjust the pump belt.

TO get the brackets off the pump, IIRC, you do need to remove the pulley. You can get the tools for that from your auto parts store loaner program.

As I recall the pulley has to come off to get separate the pump from the bracket. There is a puller to get it off, and another tool to press it back on.

Is it easiest to remove the bolts from below? I've been staring at it from above and can't seem to get to any of the bolts you mention. I see the bracket, but can't see any of the holes.

Yeah on my '79 a lot of the work on the power steering pump has to be done from below.

THis should show how the bolts are in the pump bracket. Might give you an idea. Access is tight, and the mount is kind of tucked back in under the water pump.

How did you finally make out removing that pump from the bracket?

I have a broken slide/adjuster...the cradle bracket itself is fine. (as far as I can tell) I haven't dug into it yet, but I'm wondering if I will have to remove the pulley to replace just the slide/adjuster bracket?

Thanks!

That one, you don't have to remove the pulley. The bolts go into the exhaust manifold and the motor mount. The upper bolt goes into the front of the head IIRC.

Yep, got the new bracket on without having to mess with pulley. However, now I know why my belt is flying off and probably why the adjusting bracket broke in the first place. The bolt holding pump to the carriage bracket is missing! Well, maybe not missing, but sheared off. Ugh.

Ok, can anyone give me an idea what size that bolt for the carriage pump is?
