I'm looking for some confirmation and tips on 1973 454 w/ps,ac. I finally had time to put some miles on the new toy and I'm having belt noise up front. PO had replaced alt with a new one from the auto parts store.
I've found some articles and looked in the AIM. Alternators have different part numbers in the AIM, so is that just for higher output on A/C cars? There is also a pulley listed for A/C C60 option.
Can I just find the correct pulley and swap onto my current alt?
If your store bought alt came with a pulley then its probably wrong.
The pulleys on these exchange type alternators are junk and some chrome plated which is worse.
You should have taken off the pulley on your alt.
The different numbers Is usually the amps and the size/ depth of the pulley.

Yes, you can install the correct pulley on your alternator. BB belt configuration/fit topic comes up frequently on the forum. If you can, post some pictures of your current belt configuration.
You should have 4 belts.
1. A short belt from the crank to water pump.
2. Crank to water pump to power steering.
3. Alternator to power steering.
4. Compressor to water pump.

The previous owner had replaced alternator and you're correct he must have left the store bought alternator pulley on it. I found a few pictures online and now realize it's not a deep groove either. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have any pictures right now but what you describe is what I have going on. Might have been a silly question but wanted to be sure I could just swap with the correct pulley. Hate to buy one thing and find I really needed something else
