Default L36 rebuild - need recommendations

Hey!
I want to rebuild my L36 and need some recommendations what mods I should do for more power.
I have to say, I want to keep the already bought new cam (Xtreme Energy XE268H) and the stock iron heads.

Maybe I have to bore the block 0,03" and need some new pistons.

What mods are to do for more power???

Regards, Günther

Build a 496 with iron heads. Really is just depends on how far you want to go.

Due to location guessing youre trying to make the most with what you have?
Compression, little head work a good used dual plane intake, headers usual stuff. Shouldnt cost a bunch

Wont be a high rpm motor but will make good torque with great road manners.

If you can score a 383 crank / kit - that is the most bang for the buck.

L36 is a 427.

As said, intake headers, cam you have and a good performance valve job will wake it up.

Have you verified that the heads are OK? If you have to do any serious work like replacing seats then the price difference to a new set is marginal.

I will check the heads.

To build a 496 was also my first thought. But does it make sense to build a 496 with stock heads, stock carb (750 cfm Quadrajet), the XE286H cam and stock mainfold??? And a bigger oil pan is also needed, is this correct?

The 427 with that cam makes a great street car. If I had to make 1 change , it would be a nice set of aluminum head. Choose a chamber (for a 10:1 comp) and port (square or oval)to match your engine. Then enjoy!

Agreed on the heads! Before you dump a ton of machine work into them, look at the price of new heads. Had I known how much money I was going to have tied up in machine work, I would have looked around at the "new" prices. Right after I wrote a $2000 plus check for work and parts for my block and heads, I found a local dude on CraigsList that was selling new GM vortec crate motors (with all the covers) for $1500 each. Had I found that first I would have saved at least $1000 and two months of build time....

A good set of AFR heads will gain you like 60+HP with the same cam.And save 80 lbs of weight on the front end.
OTOH a stroker crank will net you you 50ft lbs of TQ on the low end.
Both big dollar moves though.
