The last line of the installation instructions says to get an alignment and suggests increasing the castor to 3-4 degrees each side. Currently set at 1.3 and 1.8, is the castor adjustment really needed?

Lots of caster is good. The more you have the more the wheel will want to center itself and the more negative camber gain that will be realized when turning. Most BMWs run 7+ degrees. Not a lot of caster was built in the C2/C3 chassis from the factory as big caster requires too much effort for manual steering and the bias ply tires of the era didn't need the extra negative camber gain to handle. Modern cars with PS and radial tires deserve lots of caster.
