69 Gas Guage problem

Anyone got a thought on how to repair a gas guage that functions yet jumps up and down dramatically while the car is moving? Would it possibly be a faulty guage or likely a bad float or sending unit in the tank?

First thing I would do is check the ground. Grounds can do funny things to gauge performance.
