coolant Temp. on a 81

A friend just bought an 81. It runs at 210 degrees.
is this normal?
I know the C-4s fans kick on at 225, But he's afraid his 81 is running too hot.

Don't worry about it. The fan doesn't come on until some time after that, seems like it is 230 but I don't remember exactly. New cars run hotter than that all the time. :yesnod:

my 71 bb at first ran normal at 210 ( i have since changed it). I think that is normal. however IMO that does not leave you any room for error incase there is a failure.

The auxiliary electric fan in my '79 kicks in at 238 degrees (!) or whenever the AC is on. So, yes, 210 is quite normal for the C3's.

yeah, it's normal but that doesn't make it right. chevy did that (and still do) as kind of a patch to get the cars to pass emissions. the standards are low enough for 20 year old cars i would recommend installing a 180-190* 'stat and you shouldn't see 200+ except on hot days at idle.
