Expansion Tank setup #101 - need help....
Ok no  -ing......I'm just trying to figure out how to setup this new radiator system. The old system (radiator) has a cap on the tank with a hose for overflow & no expansion tank.
#1 - What hoses go where on the expansion tank ? Does the heater hoses tie into it ???
#2 - Will an earlier expansion tank from a '61 thru '66 model work for me ? - I've seen some with two inlets (or outlets) and some with just one at the bottom of the tank.
#3 - How in the frig. do I fill the radiator ? - thru the exp. tank ???
It's easy if your vette came this way - but mine didn't

The hose from the radiator goes to the expansiontank. It must end at the bottom off the tank,or atleast under the surface. From the tank theres a second hose that goes nowhere, its the breatherhose...Just tuck it somewhere, remember that there could be some water squirting out of it sometimes
#1...From the water pump (3/4") line into the expansion tank 'T' and on to the upper heater core nipple. From the intake manifold (5/8") hose to the bottom heater core nipple (one piece).
#2...It's just an expansion tank, if you're not concerned with originality any will work. The hookup is the same as above.
#3...You can fill a couple ways. You can take the thermostat housing off and fill the engine/rad part way and then after warming the engine, topping the tank off. Half full is full. Or....just fill it thru the expansion tank, slowly adding water until you get a half full tank with a warm engine.

Radiator overflow to the expansion tank. Overflow in the expansion tank to underneath the car. Heater hoses are not involved. If the overflow from the radiator to the expansion tank attaches on the top, there should be a hose inside the expansion tank that goes to the bottom of the tank to suck the water back into the radiator. Withou this the water goes out of the radiator but not back in. If the radiator overflow goes to the bottom of the expansion tank, this is not necessary.
I fill mine through the expansion tank. When the cart cools it will suck the water into the radiator.
I've never had a tank with only one inlet on the expansion tank so I don't know how they work. If too much coolant exits the radiator how does the expansion tank overflow the coolant?
Easy addition. If you have another newer car take a look. Everything will be there.

Thanx guys - I'll get on it a.s.a.p......it'll be nice to be cruisin' again without over-heating problems !!! :chevy
Now, anyone have an extra overflow / expansion tank for sale - cheap ???

Paul, I bought one of those pricey Aluminum ones. Bubba musta sold the one on my '70. I believe in the earlier years the heater hoses connected to the lower inlets.
My heater core is blocked off and the manifold plugged. I ran a overflow hose to the bottom of the tank, and an outlet hose on the top. The other two outlets I blocked off. Here's an old pic. I really liked the early aluminum tanks----not a lot of cars had them, now or then. I thought it was a nice touch.
