My 68 convertible came without an alternator so I bought one from a local
parts store. I installed it not knowing that I would need to change the pulley as is shown in the pic. I removed the alternator and took off the pulley and ordered the correct one for my car, BB with AC and PS. The problem I have now is that the pulley doesn't fit. It's as if the shaft on the alternator is too short. Do I need to replace the fan on the alternator as well? Thanks in advance.

The one I bought is 3" in diameter. It's difficult to compare it to the one in the photo. I went by the part number in the AIM so I believe that I have the correct one.
Maybe it is your fan. I went and looked at the cheap rebuild alternator I got at the local auto parts store that I used for parts. It has a raised portion on the front on the fan. I see other fans on Ebay that are indented as shown in the first picture. What does your fan look like?
I think that has to be it. The correct pulley has a flange on the back that looks as if it supposed to be a spacer to fit into the indented fan. With the raised fan I can see how you wouldn't have enough shaft for the nut.
Below is an original 69 427 alternator pulley which should be the same as your 68. The spacer width is 5/8". Like said above, that should be your problem.
