Transmission problems.
I have a 1974 Corvette Stingray with an automatic transmission and a 454 cu. in. engine. Last year I had the car looked at by a mechanic and had all the problems he found taken care of. (which included a new Holley Carb) When I floor the gas pedal the engine revs but the transmission will not shift into another gear. Am I looking at replacing the transmission?

If the transmission shifts normally when you are just driving around town or getting on the freeway the trans is probably not the issue. Was there an issue before you had the work done?

1. Check the transmission fluid level and determine if it smells burnt. If you dont know when the filter and fluid were last changed, do it now.
2. When flooring the gas pedal there is a switch connected to the pedal linkage under the dashboard which is the kick down switch. It maybe disconnected or broken.

Check the vacuum modulator also. If it is bad the trans will only shift at a very high RPM (governor shift). Check the vacuum source to the modulator for leaks first then remove the rubber line at the modulator (which is on the back of the trans) and see if there is a trace of tranny fluid on it. If so then the modulator diaphragm is bad, and that's a simple fix with a new one.
