I went to install my rebuilt steering column back into the car and for the life of me I cannot get it in. Does the dash have to be removed to install the column? It seems like the brake pedal is in the way of the lower bolting plate, but then if I try to twist the column to to clear the pedal, the lower dash is in the way. It doesn't seem like their is enough room to install it without removing the dash. Has anyone else had similar issues?
One thing I just noticed, the new dash pad from Corvette America has a cross piece (see picture below) that the original dash doesn't have. This is what's making it so hard to install the steering column, because I can't get the right angle. Am I supposed to cut that piece off of the new dash? Seems weird to me.
You are correct, but even the original GM pads had this bar in place for shipping purposes. If you look at this paper, you'll see that even at the factory this bar was in place and removed. The picture on page 7 of this pdf is from the AIM.
