Default 1982 Horn button

Gentleman: I have a metal horn button on my 1982 Tilt/Telescope column. I found a Rubber one at a recent swap meet. Can anyone give me a little history on these. Thank's Gene

Metal with a plastic insert is correct. Never heard of a rubber one.

1978-1982 cars without tilt tele had a very odd horn button and steering wheel. This is a picture of the one in my low mileage 78 sa car. I know 79 could have had a non tele column, but I believe 80-82 cars all had tilt tele... (someone else chime in on that). I'm not really sure.

But considering how odd my SA car is.. non tilt, l-82, 4speed with manual windows. lol.. And I hate to drive the car because at with my height, it's next to impossible for me to shift the gears. I do have a tele column here that I could stick in it but the car is so pure I really don't want to do that.

Is this the cap you found?

The plastic 4 spoke wheel was used on all 76's, and 77-79's with the standard, straight column. 77-79's with tilt/tele came with the leather, 3 spoke wheel. Tilt/tele became standard in 1980, as did the leather wheel.

What ever the fit is.. I think we'll all agree... FUGLY... To me one of the worst designs GM pulled off.

I don't know that it was a "FUGLY" wheel, I just think it looks out of place in a Corvette.

The same wheel was offered as an optional "sport wheel" on 71 Camaro's and 71-72 Chevelle's, and was standard on all 73-81 Camaro's and Vega GT's. On a Camaro, it was a good looking wheel, and quite an improvement over the regular skinny, smooth, hard plastic rim wheels, used on most Chevrolet's of the era. They just looked cheap when installed on a Corvette.

Smart man there Gene.. these buttons are hard to find.

I've got boxes of "I don't know why parts and other stuff... " new and used...

My wife say's pickers will have a delight when I croak... I collect everything from signs, to beer paraphernalia and I might even have a few old GM go karts laying around upstairs.. lol... I'll let her handle this when my days have passed...

Bigbird.. this car drives like it just rolled off the showroom.. I love the drive of it... but the non tilt wheel and me being 6-4 makes it nearly impossible to drive. The car itself is pristine, but knowing the inherit issues the 1978 cars had....... I have to agree that they were not one of Gm's best products.

There is however a neat and touching story behind this car and one day I'll share it and the details with this forum. It's just to soon for me... So in short, one of my best friends in the entire world ordered this car new....

Ernie
