This Pioneer unit has served me well for three years. It is 4 x 45W and that is adequate power for me. But it is a cassette unit (although CD-compatible) and they cannot no longer be bought at local stores. I considered installing a CD player in the compartment above the jack but for obvious reasons this has a very serious drawback in case of a flat tire! I thought I might find a player to go in the glovebox but no luck. So I have concluded that I will have to change out the old stereo unit and go with a new CD unit in-dash.
I have the 2002 Pioneer catalogue and the choices are many. I have not explored the prices as yet. But has anyone gone Pioneer recently? Any recommendations? Or alternatively another quality brand? As mentioned, 4 x 45-50W is fine. Appreciate your comments.
Personally I love Clarion units but they are pricy. Also if you download mp3's or have the ability and knowhow then a mp3 player would be great if you wanted to consolidate all your favorites on one cd. Other than that it's all up to your taste. Good luck on your decision.
Paul, I have a 6 disc changer mounted in the compartment behind the passenger seat, and I have no problem removing the jack at all!! BTW, I am using a Kenwood model.

Paul go to Future Shop and get the JVC SX980 it is a great buy at $299.00, I just bought one and have had one of those rare occasions where something exceeds your expectations. It also plays MP3's, I can put ten CD's on one disk, great unit :D
I recently installed a JVC "Kameleon" CD player. Purchased from Circuit City. Rotating and retracting faceplate w/remote. A little over $220.00. Installed with Infinity Dual speakers.....I'm satisfied with the results. :yesnod:
Paul, it all depends on your budget. Find a sound system you like, and learn more about it... I have to admit that I am partial to Alpine though.... I had a low grade Alpine system in an '85 Impala when I was younger, and I have yet to find a car setup that sounds better at any volume level... My 'Vette currently has a Pioneer in it and I am not happy at all... No bottom end (low tones or bass) and lots of screeching high tones... Not a nice sound...
(BTW my music preferences lie with classic rock a la Led Zep. and Deep Purple to Beethoven to Mettalica. Just as a baseline...)
I use the Kenwood Excelon 717 CD player with rotating/removable face, 50W x 4. I believe it runs for about $400, and the models changed a bit this year so it could be more $ and have a different model number now. But, I prefer Kenwood models over anything else, great quality and features. Kenwood Excelon is there upscale line of products. Everything in my car is Kenwood/Kenwood Excelon except the sub, made by Eclipse, who also makes very good CD players. But Excelon/Eclipse are pricey. The regular Kenwood's are fairly priced though.
I put a 10 disk changer in the compartment behind the pass seat. I just put a piece of foam in the bottom and layed the CD changer on it. It never skips and taken it out is a matter of un-pluging it and out it comes. I'm selling it because I purchased an MP3 player. Just wanted to let you know that mounting a CD chnager back there was EASY..
Re: Need Advice on a New Stereo Unit (feb18blacksunday)
When I was looking I found price rather than brand to be the controlling factor. I bought a Sony but would have had no problem with any of the other $300 units.
Consider one that includes an MP3 player. One MP3 disc holds about the equivalent of 10 cd's. I transer from the CD at 192kbs and in a car like the Vette there is no noticeable loss of quality.

Re: Need Advice on a New Stereo Unit (paul79)
Do you mean you can put 10 CDs on one CD-RW? I am not up to speed on these matters....
MP3's use compression and you can put 10 or more CD's on one CDRW and then erase it and put ten different cd's on it. It is simple you need a CD burner though.
I have new Pioneer speakers, front and back. What is a Kameleon player?
Paul...... JVC "KAMELEON" CD player. The "kameleon" refers to the rotating and retracting face plate when the key is turned off, rendering the face plate solid and blacked-out.. The graphic display is programable also. Has all kinds of goodies including a remote.
An outstanding feature that I like is the "Cruising Mode" which automatically adjusts the volume according to the engine speed. Apparently it senses the alternator rpms and uses this as it's guide. Suprising on how quick it is to react to the rpm's. No reason to touch the volume when coming off the freeway to make a stop. Likewise, when you mash the pedal, the volume cranks up.
Thanks to all who replied! I am going shopping today. And yes, my computer is a Dell Optiplex with a "burn" capability. I really like the idea of having all my favourites on one disc. I may be back to you later on the procedure to do that.
