Valve guides
When did GM start using replaceable valve guides? My 73 L-48 heads casting # 3998993 are badly worn. Even though I am replacing them with aluminum heads, I am curious as to weather these have replaceable guides or not.

On early s/b chevys the head casting is the guide. No inserts are used from the factory. The standard fix is to machine the guides and install your choice of valve guide. They are cast iron guides,bronze false guides or split bronze guide liners to name those I know of. I'm not sure if the newer generation chevys are using inserts yet but 73 was as I described, unless previously worked on. Hope that helps
