thinking about replacing my stock hei on my '76 with the pro billet piece
from msd and looking for the pros/cons.Could i save the money and recurve
my old distributor? What do you get with the msd piece that i don't have with
the old hei? Do i need the pro billet with or without the vacuum advance canister.I currently am running the msd 6al box and the blaster 2 coil but
never did replace my old hei which is as it was from stock.Engine is aprox.
375 hp with 10:1 cr, 4-speed, 4:11 rear, 750 holley duel feed, flat tops,
64cc heads, duel plane alum. hiriser, k/n filter/extreme top etc. Will this msd
distributor give my engine a shot in the arm? thanx wade

Re: msd pro billet distributor (wadey)
Very hard to say whether the distributor will give you any more power than the one you have but it won't be any worse. I installed a 6AL, Blaser coil and Pro Billet distributor and while it does feel like it is better at the high RPM's it is very difficult to say if I gained any HP. I am going to put it on the dyno and see but right now
MSD Pro Billet is a good piece and I bought the one with the vacuum but I have since removed it ( you can lock it out ). It comes with different springs etc. and bushings that allow you to set any curve you want as well as how many degrees of mechanical advance you want or you can simply lock the mechanical advance for all out drag racing. :D
All any distributor does (when coupled w/ MSD 6 & Blaster) is to trigger the spark box, determine the curve rate, then distribute the pulse to the sp wire. Both coupled to MSD 6 & Blaster, I doubt if you'd see an appreciable difference (if any at all) between an HEI in good condition with a proper curve and a probillet with proper curve. IMHO, I'd freshen the HEI & get a kit to recurve ... save yer $. The stock curve is limiting you. Forum member Lars has a very good paper here somewhere that'll assist you in proper curve. IMHO, most street V8's running distributors should also run a proper vac can.
Just thought I would mention I just installed my MSD Pro Billet today on my '70. Still waiting on the new ignition wires but I have to say it looks trick. My distributor was shot so this seemed like a good fix. True you can adjust curve and advance very easily and the distributor does come with color coded springs of different gauges for just that purpose. Also nice to know that if I ever plan on really stepping up my engine my MSD 6Al might just save my engine.
I got the MSD also. What I like most about it is the ease of altering the timing curve, I barely know one end of the distributor from the other and changed the MSD's curve in less than 5 minutes while drinking a beer.
