Default Oil Filter Adapter Questions

Last year I had taken my engine block to an engine block to a local machine shop to have the cylinders honed. Since then, I rebuilt the engine put it back into the vehicle and yesterday I went to install the oil filter and to my surprise, the oil filter adapter was missing! I know it was there when I took the engine block there. Now I'm at the machine shop because they removed it and at myself for not going over the block before receiving it and not noticing it during my rebuilding the engine.

My questions is
Were the OEM adapters made of steel and came with a bypass valve?
Did they have a gasket between it and the block?

I did order one from Summitt it is made of aluminum and a gasket is not needed and it has a bypass and bolts are included. It has positive reviews.

As for the machine shop, even though several months have passed I've got to let them know about their error since I did pay for the work that was done. I have paid a price for not checking and a painful reminder for not doing so.

Machine shops are notorious for loosing stuff. In addition to emailing them my notes so we have it in writing I also take several pictures when I drop stuff off.

Mine was missing too after a rebuild but I was going to get a non bypass adapter anyway.

Mine was just a bolt on with gasket and bolts.

They are made of pot metal or aluminum and don't use a gasket.

I'd check your local big box stores. $40 is ridiculous. Here's what you need at O'Reilly:

Melling MFA350. Summit & Jeg's for $16. Two bolts, no gaskets needed.
