OT: Anyone Using Cable Modem?
I just got mine yesterday and I can`t believe how fast this is. No matter how many pictures come up they are loaded very quickly if not instantly. I have done a few speed tests and have been getting around 834.4kbps.
Is this good or just average.
Cable is probablly the fastest connection out there for the money. Just pray you never move and have to go back to dial-up. Your life will be a living hell!
That is high average for cable. It really depends on how many users are linked to the system at a given time. I abandoned cable last winter because the local company was providing very poor service. I am now hooked up through the telephone lines and see between 400-850 kbps on a regular basis.
I have comcast cable and like you was really amazed at the download speeds. I lve in an area that has old phone lines so dial up really blows bad and as tanman21 said I think it would be a living hell to have to go back to dial up.
Checked out your link and results indicate 824.2 for me.
I used to have Mediaone cable, called ATTBI these daze, and it got SO SLO here in OP Fl. that I gave it up....and went to ATTBI for phone service with two lines....now that second line is about ten bux/month.....
and I manage to get 50k service out of it, supposedly...but sometimes even that is slow as hell, and this site loads really badly in the evenings...daytime is ok, sometimes night/early am is really slow too...
can't figger it, really....
but at 50k, it's really fast....
as cable without dialup....it got so slow at one point, it stopped working...
and for 50 bux/month...well that lasted about 2 weeks....
only thing that apparently doesn't slow down is DSL, it's allways up....but my local BellSouth underground lines were fried in a lightening strike some 3 years ago...and they so noisey, can't even talk on them anymore...
I just checked mine and it says 1,419.1
It's a cable connection. They just upgraded the lines this summer to provide telephone service as well.
I guess the new lines helped the internet as well.
Yeh, when I FIRST signed up, it was GREAT!!!, BUT as everyone else hung on the teat, well it slowed down to forgetaboutit,....then they increased the price to 50 bux/month....in 2 weeks I was gone....
It's great for speed - but look out in new systems.
Our company offers varying speeds: 512k, 768k, and 1.5M.
I bought the 512k - plenty fast enough at home - and cheaper ($50).
Now - here's the kicker: The company gets more and more people signing
up - and the network starts to get bottlenecked. Since they cannot
handle more load, they cut back the speeds of the packages - while
increasing the price at the same time !!
I'm not giving it up - just :mad .
I think they should offer annual contracts that are binding to them.
BTW - test says 480k (have 512k) - and I am downloading a movie as it was done.
I've had cable modem for about 18 months, when I first got it, it was blazingly fast. It only seems medium fast now. My performance is very spotty, most of the time it is 750 to 900, sometimes it is less than 150 other times 1200+. It really depends on so many conditions other than just how many people are hanging the line. The internet itself has a number of squeeze points that will seriously hamper performance. Also the place your are going to has to have a server that can handle the load.

the only problem is that once you get it you won't want to go back to a slower connection. thats my problem. here at college my dorm has T-1 and the science building has T-3. T-3 is nice!!! congrats on the cable modem. hope you have fun with it.
Yes that is a very common problem with cable: the more the less merrier. That combined with the demise of Excite about a year ago threw my cable service into a tizzy. Days/weeks on end without reliable service. Went with Bell Sympatico and not a problem since.
Barry that is smokin. Are you on comcast?? If so we gotta talk. That is almost as fast as that LT1.
Hi Eddie,
I don't know what comcast is. I used to be with Shaw Cable as the provider.
Shaw is a national type provider across Canada.
They sold there presence here to a local company, that now owns most of the cable in Nova Scotia.
I pay $39.95/mo Canadian. Which based on some of the posts here seems to be a good deal.
Is comcast something that the local Cable/Internet provider subscribes to ??
I just tried the speed test again and it was 1,249.6 kbps
