Not sure why the column had to come apart. I just installed my ignition switch in my by dropping the whole column. I don't think you have to take it apart. I guess in your case something else was able to get fixed.

The key way seized and I couldn't turn the key after losing power on the road, assuming the ignition switch went bad as well. The key way was hanging up and staying in the full forward position just prior to breaking down - I had a new switch ordered. The morning this happened, I could drive it fine by moving the switch back to the proper position so the starter wouldn't keep engaging as I shifted through the gears.
When they took steering wheel off, the retainer ring broke apart (very brittle). I'm replacing the retaining ring, ignition switch, turn signal switch (as the flashers wouldn't work - plastic piece broken off mechanism) and the key buzzer switch. First time I had to use the flashers and they wouldn't work while parked on the shoulder of NJ Turnpike at 3 am. I checked oil, air, fluids, belts, etc. Another item to add to the pre-trip checklist. That and flares ...

Oh man now that's a bad place to be on the side of any rd at 3am. A crappie experience for sure.
