I've got a 1968 Corvette that I want to install a Hurst shifter in. Can anyone with experience here tell me if the standard tailhousing mount will work? Or do I need a different linkage kit and mount the shfter in the factory location?
I don't have the engine and trans in the car, so it's hard to tell. The Hurst information appears to use a standard Muncie linkage.
I have mounted a few of these and they don't use any of the factory linkage or mounts. The factory shifter is bolted to the frame, there lies the problem as the motor twist and the chassis does not the linkage can bind up. The Hurst system mounts to the trans so the shifter moves with the trans.
If you are interested I have a Hurst setup that I just removed from a 68 Vette with all the linkage and mounts. It has a few miles on it but I drove it home about 60 miles from a forum members house and it was solid. I'll have to contact him but I know he does not want it so it might be a good deal. I can take some pictures if you are interested.
That helps. I was hoping that a standard Muncie linkage was the deal, mounted on the tailshaft. Wasn't sure how that would align with the hole in the floor, that's all.
If the shifter is a competition plus, I'd be interested - Please let me know via PM.
Honestly, I didn't like the Hurst shifter. I put one in mine, used the repro T handle to at least look stock. Handle hit the console when going to reverse. Too notchy for my taste. I set it up with the trans on the bench, neutral alignment tool, and set the stops correctly. Went back to the stock shifter which I never had a problem with in, at that time 35 years of ownership. Stock shifter, cleaned and lubed and set in the short throw holes shift with nothing more than a flick of the wrist. FWIW road raced many a year using stock shifters with no problem includng 6 hour races at the Glen with multiple drivers. Stock shifters aren't to everyones liking, but my experience tell me differently.
