Default Console Repair.

I am trying to repair the center console on my 68. Does anyone know of a epoxie/glue by name that actually 'bonds' to the plastic/glass that forms the console? I need to form tabs for the screws that attach the metal shift plate to the console. Everything I have tried does not stick/bond to the material. Thanks.

I'd like to know if they can be repaired also. Sounds like I'm about in the same shape you are. I know I can get a new one for about $105.00, but I ran out of bucks a long time ago on this project.

I had one break off, too. I searched the parts houses and found this answer http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...dept%5Fid=1642

I took the less expensive way out. I had about 1/2 a tab left, so I went to the local Ace Hardware. In the nuts and bolts section are the fasteners that are "u" shaped with a hole on one side and a pressed two-edge thread on the other (you've seen these and you'll know what I mean when you go to the hardware store. If you take your thumb and index finger and make believe you're holding a sandwich, that is what the fastener looks like from the side.) Anyway, I got a bunch (about 13 cents each) to keep for projects. I slid the fastener over what was left of the tab, thread side down, put the console plate back in position, lined the fastener to the console hole with an awl, then screwed her down. Hope this helps you. :)

Tyler,

I just used some construction epoxy to glue one of the steel tabs to the instrument dash panel on our ’69. Mixed it with some finely cut fiberglass. Tonight when I got home I was going to take the Dermal to it to clean up the edges. If it works, I well post the name.

By the way I have an unused (new) Al Knock repro black center console. If someone can use it. I did not care for how it matched the existing vinyl, so installed one from Corvette America. But if someone wants it make me an offer

Tyler,

Simpson brand "Epoxy-tie" mixed with a bit of fiberglass for good luck. Worked great. I do not know it this is sold at builder supply stores. But I could get you a tube from the factory if you want. (Two week wait time as I am out of town the rest of this week.

Good luck with it.

I glued some aluminum tabs in with 2part epoxy. It worked, but some of
the rework let go after taking it back apart once or twice. Gluing a tab in place,
then glassing over it with decent overlap should hold up much better.

Any 2 part epoxy should stick well. Scuff the area before applying, to help
the adhesive adhere.

Ive used a 2 part epoxy call "Plastic Weld" and it can have up to 3500 lb breaking strength. I've used it on my vettes rear hatch covers frames and on my snowmobile hoods after I rolled it many times. Works great and goes on more like a thick toothpaste than a goop epoxy so you can control it better. Smells real strong though.

It dries a white color though so you may have to use a paint over the plastic if you get any on the front side. You can get it at Champion Auto Parts or Ive even seen it at Walmart.
