I would like to get me 8 track working in my 78. It wont play tapes. All I get is blank noise from the speakers. Is there a common type of repair that one could do to get this working, like a simple rubber belt replacement or something?
I used this guy when my 8 track in my Dino crapped out. Barry, the owner is very thorough. It took a while but came back upgraded for aux in and worked well.

If you are comfortable taking the radio apart, you will probably find that the belt inside that drives the player is bad. Similar to a aged rubber band (although not the same) they will harden and break in time.
If you're not comfortable doing that, you can contact Dr Don and see if he handles them. I know he handles C4 tape players.

Good luck... GUSTO
This.
Mine played when I bought it, but too slow. It was the drive belt. I replaced it with an O ring, been working since then. 8 tracks sound pretty bad anyhow, but it's nostalgic cool.
I looked it up once and the 8 track option was an additional $500 in my 1977. LOL

If you decide to take it apart and it is the belt, these guys have a lot of different sizes for various tape decks as as well as the turntable needles. They got a vintage pioneer deck I had going. https://www.turntableneedles.com/
Wow either $395 or $525 to restore. I think I'll try other avenues but thanks.
Here's another option for you, Factory Radio Service and Repair. I heard about them on the C5 Forum when I decided to look into adding an iPod type device (earphone jack installed in the face of the radio) to play my iPod through the radio.
I sent the radio from my C5 to them to have the plugin added, the cost was under a hundred dollars. Since my C5 radio is a non-CD, cassette tape only radio, I also asked if he could install a new belt on my tape player as it was the original belt. He stated that he would service the radio with a new belt for an additional $45.
You might contact them and discuss your radio with them. Ask for John Nguyen. You may be able to get the tape player fixed and add an iPod plug-in for less than half the price you've been quoted to repair your radio.
