Default How necessary is this shield?

Is this shield necessary. I assume it's a heat shield under the diff for the exhaust.

That shield protects the fiberglass spring from heat from the exhaust. If you have side pipes don't worry.

If I am correct, this is a stock shield that was at least used on 1977 Vettes, as mine had one.....and it was installed with a standard metal leaf spring. So, I don't think GM added this in any many as a heat shield for a fiberglass spring, given they didn't install fiberglass springs on a 77.. So my guess, it somehow shields heat from the differential???? Anyone know why?

if the OP's profile is correct the car is a 75 convertible. The part was used from 75 to 77, 356918, Shield, RR Ext C/Ovr Pipe. I agree the purpose is to shield the differential.

My '77 had a shield like that when I disassembled the rear end.
When I put the rear end back in, I chose to leave it out because I'm running side exhaust.

I have had a VBP plastic spring and dual exhaust run as per stock for some 22 years now, and nothing for shield......

Yes I have a '75 vert with a metal leaf spring. No sidepipes. So it's there to protect the diff from heat?

My 78 L-82 has that shield and I reinstalled it when I put on my VBP 360 monospring on in 1986...same spring today and shield is still on.

If you have a catalytic convertor in place definitely use the shield. Lot of heat from the cat radiates through the exhaust pipes.

Otherwise you can probably go without if you really want to. But why?
I feel that shield is also to protect the differential.

No cat. Dual exhaust. It collected a lot of road debris so I thought about not re installing it.

It seems to me you must consider all the heat coming from the engine compartment and exhaust, including the cat. When you are at speed that hot airflow is passing under the car and the diff.

the concern would be the overall effect on the diff oil temp. It seems no surprise to me that they installed this after the introduction of cats and higher temps to reduce emissions.

Too much temp in the diff will reduce its life expectancy

If you have the shield, reuse it...no reason not to put it back on...this is really not hard.

1980 4 speed has a shield with a metal spring. Even though it was converted to dual exhaust, I kept it in place.

Default My 2 cents,,,

If your concerned about, dirt and debris, clean it out at each oil change or tire rotation, then re install it as factory thought it was helpful, if you don't like the look, then put it on the shelf,,

My 79 L82 4 Speed car had one. Removed during a rear end rebuild. 150K without it, no problems.
