I have a similar set up with the 3.70 gear..... great around town but if you enjoy a top end blast occasionaly.. its a touch too much.If you are running stock rims I agree with 7T1vette.

Mine with 4.11 gears and a 700R4 is geared to run 136 MPH @ 7000 RPM in 3rd gear and 196 MPH @ 7000 RPM in 4th. How much top end blast do you need?

My Art Carr trans is built to run flat out in 4th. Stock they will downshift to 3rd.

285/40/18 Goodyear F1 Supercar on the rear. Planning on a set of drag radials of the same size.

If the th700r4 was a manual, It would be a ''wide ratio'' gear trans.

The the rpm spacing between each gear is wider, then narrower than the other.

Go with gm's thc2004r. Considered a close ratio. All the gears speeds are evenly spaced. Just an awesome trans in a c-3.

Found in G body's and elcaminos of the 80's. Low gears are calling your name.

I bought two a 5000 and a 6500 for race days. It is a easy 5 minute change if the tranny has enough room for tunnel clearance. Just pop the side cap off and R&R the gov. Some people like to play with the weights and springs. I just bought mine preset from Art Carr the company not the person
Yeah, I remember the TRANS builder I got the trans from saying something about different springs, if I felt the shift points were not set up correctly.
I thought I heard you have to drop the pan, which to mean equals 2-3 gallons of fluid all over the place. Didnt want to play that game...

You don't have to drop the pan. The governor is under a dome cover on the driver side towards the rear of the tranny. You can get a kit from B&M with different springs and weights. They give you approximates on shift points but final adjustment is done by trial and error.

It helps to get the rear of the car up higher than the front to keep from leaking much fluid out of the governor housing.

Mike

PS: I use a BTO TV cable adaptor on my Holley linkage. It allows you to adjust the starting point on the cable adjustment and how quickly it pulls the cable. I set mine more aggressively than stock. It is initially open farther than stock would be and is pulled out more at any throttle position in between closed throttle and open. This slightly raises shift points, but moreso raises fluid pressure at any throttle position up to full throttle, where it would be maxed. This helps the clutches live longer with a healthy engine driving at a lot of part throttle like on the street.

My 69 Coupe, SBC Dart 427 EFI, TH2004R and 3.70 rear.

I would go for 3.70 rear with TH700 (or maybe 4.11)

That is good to know. Trans are not my thing.
Its a later model 700 , apparently the earlier ones pre 86 or 87 were not built well.
Its been upgraded bigger cervo, better parts, I do not have a list, and a superior shift kit. I do know if I set that TV cable tighter, it will shift gears hard and snap yer neck a little. But I got it dialed back.
Problem was I told him I was upgrading to a BB and I needed it to handle the extra power/torque. But it was adjusted to a SB 350 crossfire when it was installed.
I have the adapater from Holley for the TV cable and I did buy some adapater from BTO a while back, but never installed it.
The trans per the builder is also as he put it dummy proof as to NOT have the trans burn up due to in proper TV cable adjustment. Not sure what he did.
