Check the suffix code located on the passenger side up front, just to the side of the water pump. It is where the engine numbers are located on the pad.
Unfortunately, the LT-1s were/are easy to clone. The build sheet, tach redline, engine part numbers, # of fuel lines are the only real ways to tell. Personally, a 1970 or 1971 LT-1, IMO SHOULD be looked at by someone who knows these cars. In 1972, the VIN was coded to ID the LT-1.
As was suggested, there isn't any way to tell by the VIN until you get to the 1972 model year. I am going on memory here and hopefully Stan Falenski will jump in here.
Here goes: LT1's had Holley carbs and a single fuel line. Base engine cars had the Rochester with a return fuel line. Look along the driver's side rail for any evidence of a line that was removed. In addition, LT1's had the AIR system, which probably would have been removed anyhow. Rpm gauge had a difference between the two but I don't have it off the top of my head. LT1 was 6500?, base engine ????.
If the car isn't available for your inspection, then you may have to go on trust. Many of these base items can be replaced to make a more valuable LT1 so perhaps you should see if anyone in that area can inspect the car.
Agree with Shannon. The only LT 1 available with AC was the 72. And...they built only about 240 of them...coupes and convertibles. No such "factory" animal as a 71 LT 1 Air Cond. car. Chuck
HAHA!!! I sent an email to the seller's wife confronting them about it not being a real LT-1. Keep in mind, their ad CLEARLY states LT-1. (they are asking $19k)
Here is her response:

Dan,
We know it was not an original LT1 and I don't believe Skip is selling it as such. The man he bought it from had converted the car into an LT1 and the engine has been completely re-done, powder coated, and like brand new, in fact the mileage is impressively low. The car was built for speed not as a collector item. In my opinion it is a gorgeous car and is in exquisite shape much more so than most I've seen from that year. This car is for one who wants a beautiful, fast, fantastic running muscle car. I truly believe it is worth more than 15K, there has been too much work and love put into it to be any less. I appreciate your interest and hope you find what your looking for one day. Thank you, have a nice day!
