Default 1972 steering column shift tube, is it needed?

Took the steering column out to rebuild. The cable from the 4 speed to the steering column shift tube lever was long gone when i got the car. I can do without this function, have so for years. Is there a way to NOT install the shift tube but still have everything else function properly?

It's been a while, but IIRC the tube also functions as part of the mast jacket bearings. Easy way around that is to tack the reverse lockout arm to the outer jacket so it won't keep you from locking the column.

I hear you. I've been looking it over and when the tube lever is moved, by the cable, the tube rotates. There is a cut-out at the column head end of the tube. I'm thinking that notch engages something, I just can't figure out what exactly it is. What ever it engages is was hoping to rig it in a position that will allow the tube (clip/etc.) to be removed altogether.

I was hoping Mr Shea knew of a slick solution. Jim?
