I need help figuring out what gear ration I have in my 68 327. I have a turbo 400 in it if that matters. Are there markings on the housing? It so where are they (top, bottom). If I find the codes, what are some of the common translations to tell me the ratio. I thought the car has 3.08, but driving at 70 the tach is close to 3300. Thanks for your help and experience.
Bottom of the case...in front of the spring....you'll find a stamped assembly date, AND a stamped (not cast) 2 letter code. The 2 letter code will tell you what was originally in there. BUT....could have been changed. What to do?
Jack the car up....both rear wheels off the ground. Trans in neutral. Mark a spot on the driveshaft, and mark a spot on one of the rear wheels with chalk. Rotate the rear wheel one revolution, and count the number of times the driveshaft turns....about 3 times = 3.08 4 times =4.11 and so on.
I have 16 codes listed in my book...AK, AL, AM, AN AO, AP, AS, AT AU, AV, AW, AX, AZ, FA, FB, AND FC. Many of these are the same ratio, but different usage...BB vs. SB, posi, non posi, etc. Chuck
