since i got my car it has never totaly accelerated smooth... untill today..... after countless trial and error i dialed in the mixture screws and adjusted the float level.... and this time it finaly worked pretty good..... next is the accerator pump....and jets and so on.... Anyways my question is regarding the idle mixture screw.. i have read on a post that you start at 1 1/4 turn and then adjust from there.... I have mine at about 7/8 of a turn out.... do you guys think that is too little.. i am just scared it might be running a bit too lean and i don't want to crack a piston or do any other damage associated with lean condition. What is the best method of adusting the mixture scews? the way i did it was turing them in untill the RPM's started to drop then i turned them out about a 1/8 a turn or a little less... what do you think? :seeya :chevy
Help... I need somebody... help... not just anybody... help... won't you please please help me...... (beatles)
Come on guys...... there has got to be a holley expert around here somewhere
I believe both the primary and secondary idle screws (the big ones connecting to the acclerator pump) have to be at the same setting before you can get the idle/air right.
The 1 1/4 turns is just a baseline to get you started. You have used the correct procedure to set the idle mixture. 7/8ths does seem like it's too little but if the throttle blades aren't open too far (about .030" of the transfer slot showing) and the power valve is correct (1.5 to 2" of vacuum rating below idle vacuum) then things should be cool. Check your plugs if you are still concerned. If they look white or things are melting, enrichen it a little.
remember, these are "idle" mixture screws. They only influence the air fuel ratio when the idle cicuit is in action. My experience has been that most Holleys seem to run better coming off idle when you are set a touch on the "rich" side, which means you could set highest and steadiest vaccum at idle and then go 1/8 turn more open or rich.
Cory, the manifold vacuum port is on the front passenger side of the carb below the metering block. If you have vacuum advance connected to it and want to have vacuum advance while you make the adjustment you'll need to install a tee.
