Default need some help: strange sound

Maybe some one can help...over the last 2 days I have been hearing this sound that seems to eminate from the enigine area...the closest thing that I can describe this sound is kind of like a hair dryer on high speed, it is loud enough that I can hear it when I am at a stop light. I did find that I have a leak somewhere in my power stearing system because the power steaing resevour looked to be close to bone dry (funny, I haven't felt the stearing binding up or giving out a griding sound when I turn the wheel)...I filled it back up but this noise still persists, could it be the PS pump is gonna go, or could it be a vacuum leak somewhere, or something else? any suggestions? :(

If it was that low, it aerated the remaining fluid. Even after you add fresh P/S fluid, it'll make noise because there is air in it. It looks like a milk shake in the reservoir. The trick is to run it, then let it sit for an hour or so, then fire it up for a moment, let it sit again, etc., etc. until the fluid is clear. If it's the steering making noise, that'll cure it. If it persists, take the belts off and fire it up and see if the noise is gone. Then put them back on one at a time 'till you isolate the problem.

Have you checked the fan clutch? Is it moving freely or did it lock up? If it's not the ps pump I would check the fan.

Hey Skruball, is the sound a high pitched whistling sound? I have one of those that starts after I drive the car a while, shut it down and then restart it. The sound tends to die down when I accelerate the car but comes back loud and clear when I'm at idle. One guy that heard it said it kind of sounded like I had a blower on it. I think mine's a vacuum leak but have yet to find it. Good luck with yours and let us know what you find when you find it.

You are right bulldog. the sound is kind of high pitched...When I 1st start it, the sound is not there, but after maybe 5 or 10 minutes you can begin to hear it...then it seems to be more prevelant at every stop lite I come to...when I engage the clutch to start off from the light I can hear it die down a little, but I can still hear it as I slow down to the next light. I have noticed the sound die on it's own once, just before I pulled into the drive way...I got out while it was still idling and then it started again.
