I need some instructions on how to hook up a starter to bench test. Just had mine rebuilt. Installed it and nothing happens. Checked all connections and battery and everything appears ok. I pulled it back out and want to test it out of car. What connections do I need to make to the solenoid and battery? Thanks.
Connect negitive side of jumper cable from negitive battery post to side of starter motor housing (ground). It usually clamps on good near one of the mounting bolt holes. Connect the positive jumper cable from the positive battery post to the positive battery cable connection on the starter solonoid. Then use a smaller jumper wire to make a connection to the small terminal on the solonoid. When you energize this smaller terminal with 12v it should kick the gear out and begin spinning the starter motor. Hold the starter down good with your foot as it will likely jump into movement as the motor spins. I hope this doesnt sound confusing. Its easier to actually do it than explain how in words. For me anyway.
Thanks for the tips. I ended up taking it to Autozone and they tested it. Ran fine. I rechecked allwires and grounds, hooked it back up and it worked fine. Go figure!

Sometimes, that's all it takes. You may have just had a bad connection that you didn't see the first time and you fixed it when you hooked back up.
