Cutting weight on the reciprocating assembly and leaving the rotating mass alone improves revving substantially.

That and a aluminum flywheel. :yesnod:
A light flywheel will cause slower revving between shifts. Inertia is a good thing.

Does the 502 have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump? Joe

is the block on the GMPP catalog? and is your crank forged?

u bet, 4340 steel
Anybody tried the new SCAT 9000 cast big block cranks? You can get a 4.25" stroker crank for around $279! Sounds like just the thing for a moderate rpm (under 6500 or so) street 540+ cube engine. Until now, you could only build a stroker big block with a steel crank ($$$). If I were doing it again (I just may :)), I would use the cast crank.

My brother recently put together a Buick with a 502 Tonawanda crate engine.
Here is a link to a 4 meg movie we shot on my first ride.
I was impressed:)

I almost went the cheap route such as this. I rather spend more $$ and have piece of mind. Plus I don't know how a cast crank with 500hp+ N/A PLUS a 300-400hp shot of Nitrous would take it??

Well, if you're serious about a 400 shot, you certainly shouldn't be considering a cast crank... ;) 900+ hp is drag car/slick territory (usually), and cast bb cranks aren't for that. At that power level, you may also have issues with a stock GM block!

With a 4.25" stroker you can build a 540 or larger, short deck engine that can make well over 600 streetable hp at around 6000 rpms without nitrous. For an engine like that, I don't think a forged crank will buy you much more than a lighter wallet. The SCAT 9000 cranks have a great reputation for strength in budget street stroker small blocks.

The Scat 4.25" crank was my first option, but Mitchell was out of stock. I bought the Eagle crank instead, around 800.00, still cheap and a good price for what I got....4.25", forged, internally balanced. I also bought the Eagle H beam rods, 3/8", good for up to 800hp. The rotating assy was almost on the money, and the guy doing the balancing showed me one small drill in the crank's counterweight. Said he's never seen anything so close out of the box.

Just gotta love CNC machining on these parts.

The wheels, they are Western, 8" knock off's.

speaking of short blocks... i walked into an auto store that sells 350 chevys... asked if i could get a short block... guy said no such thing... :bs

I just kinda looked at him bug eyed

I wish the 502 was in reach... but the accesories and such are to much for my wallet :cry

I agree, but my block is a 4 bolt Gen V 454 with forged internals (crank, rods, pistons, compete ARP studded engine). I've ran one at 1200hp all season in a tractor pull truck and she liked it just fine. I guess we will see how she holds up. :D
